Are you prepared to venture into the captivating world of the camera department? If you're eager to learn from industry experts and gain the skills required to excel as a Camera Operator and Digital Image Technician in local television and film productions, our 2023 Alexa Mini Camera and DIT Workshop is tailor-made for you!


ABOUT WORKSHOP:

Session 1: Friday December 15: 9am-5pm

Session 2: Saturday December 16: 9am-5pm

Session 3: Sunday December 17: 9am-5pm

In this comprehensive workshop, you'll explore critical areas that are essential for a successful career in the camera department.

Master the Essentials: Develop a deep understanding of the workflow and processes of pre-production through post-production with a DIT and how their responsibilities influence on-set decisions. 

Navigate On-Set Protocol: Acquire invaluable insights into on-set etiquette, professionalism, and the camera department's role within the broader production team.

Effective Communication: Provide valuable insights to the Director of Photography regarding the advantages and limitations of specific setups. Act as a bridge between the on-set team and the post-production crew, optimizing workflow between the two for superior results.

Learn In-depth Skills:

  • Digital Cameras and Computer Proficiency: Possess an expert command of digital cameras, file formats, storage media, and computer systems to ensure a seamless workflow.

  • Digital Photography Mastery: Develop a keen eye for contrast, focus, lighting, cinematography, color, and grading raw footage.

  • Problem-Solving: Further your capabilities to troubleshoot and resolve equipment, technology, and cable connection issues efficiently.

  • Effective Collaboration: Learn effective communication and collaboration with your fellow camera department colleagues and other departments for a seamlessly operating production.

Whether you're looking to refine your existing skills or level up within the camera department, our workshop promises a hands-on and immersive learning experience, guided by industry professionals. 

Led by experienced DIT + Camera Operator Kimberly Sauer and DIT Vincent Carnevale, this workshop will provide practical advice and guidance based on their respective experiences within the industry.

PREREQUISITES: Some basic camera experience and knowledge will be required to understand some of the concepts in this workshop, such as exposure settings and a basic familiarity with parts of a camera. Proficiency is not required, but a plus! Must be able to lift 60 lbs, stand for long periods of time, and be comfortable climbing ladders.

Registration Fee: $725 (full scholarships are available for up to ten participants)

This workshop is open to all community members, and is specifically seeking candidates from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, women, and those historically excluded from the film industry.


INSTRUCTORS:

Vincent Carnevale is a Hudson Valley-based Digital Imaging Technician and Camera Assistant. He is a member of IATSE Local 600. He has worked jobs ranging from feature films, to big budget commercials, to fashion, and everything in between. Vincent has a B.S. in Radio/TV Production from SUNY New Paltz with a minor in Computer Science.

 

Kimberly Sauer is a Camera Operator, Digital Imaging Technician, and a proud member of both IATSE Local 600 and NABET Local 11. Her work history includes films and television shows for National Geographic, Discovery, PBS, Hulu, Netflix, ABC, HBO, Showtime, and many others — giving priority to causes and projects that highlight and conserve culture, wildlife and our planet, empower women, and tell meaningful stories from the around the world. Her son Hammy is her pride and joy (and is also a cat). When not behind a camera, Kimberly can usually be found taking long romantic walks to the taco truck, getting lost in the jungle, or becoming one with her couch.

 

Mia Cioffi Henry is an IATSE Local 600 Director of Photography who lives and works between New York City and Pescara, Italy. She travels all over the world to shoot feature films, TV, commercials and music videos which have premiered in major film festivals such as Sundance, SXSW, New York Film Festival and Berlinale.

With a background in dance, production design and still photography, Ms. Cioffi Henry is inspired by Sirkian Melodrama, the world of William Eggleston and fantastical light in everyday life.

Ms. Cioffi Henry received her MFA in Cinematography at NYU Tisch as a Dean’s Fellow and Graduate Assistant. She is the recipient of the Nestor Almendros Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography, and a finalist for the ARRI Volker Bahnemann Award. Her work has won Jury Awards at SXSW and Locarno film festivals. Ms. Cioffi Henry is the current Head of Cinematography at NYU Tisch's Graduate Film program.

Ms. Cioffi Henry is a member and mentor of 600 Black Women, a group of Black female identifying members of the Local 600 Camera Guild, an inaugural member of Cinematographers XX a group of working cinematographers who are women and the BIPOC filmmaking collective Sporas.
